Frequently Asked Questions
-
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain mushroom species. It affects serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to changes in perception, cognition, emotional processing, and sense of self.
-
Psilocybin is the most extensively studied psychedelic medicine. Clinical research has demonstrated significant therapeutic benefit across multiple mental health conditions, as well as measurable improvements in well-being, cognitive flexibility, creativity, and connection in healthy adults. Compared to other psychedelic compounds, psilocybin has a comparatively favorable safety profile when used in a screened, regulated setting, and may be appropriate for some guests for whom medicines such as ayahuasca or ibogaine may be unsafe.
-
Psilocybin is generally well tolerated in screened populations. Common short-term adverse effects may include nausea, headache, anxiety, confusion, or emotionally challenging experiences. Comprehensive medical and psychological screening is essential to identify contraindicated medications, conditions, or risk factors prior to participation. Some guests may need to taper off daily medications with a trained professional prior to taking psilocybin. With professionally trained facilitators, challenging experiences can often be among the most meaningful and beneficial over time, with integration support.
-
In Colorado, psilocybin is legal for therapeutic use under the Natural Medicine Health Act when administered within a licensed natural medicine healing center for adults 21 and older. Psilocybin remains illegal under federal law, though psilocybin has has received ‘breakthrough therapy’ designation for specific clinical indications uncer the U.S. FDA, and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly expressed support for further evaluation and potential rescheduling.
-
No. A prescription or physician referral is not required under Colorado’s Natural Medicine Health Act. All individuals may apply for services, though eligibility is determined through required medical, psychological, and family history screening. Some applicants may be excluded based on identified risk factors.
-
No. Psilocybin creates a temporary “critical window” of increased neuroplasticity in which therapeutic and personal work may be more effective. Outcomes depend on preparation, integration, and individual effort. Results are not guaranteed.
-
Certain physical or mental health conditions may make participation inappropriate or unsafe. These may include some cardiovascular conditions, psychiatric diagnoses such as schizoaffective disorders, other risk factors, or an inability to taper off certain contraindicated medications. Final eligibility is determined through a screening process focused on safety.
-
Psilocybin may be tolerated alongside some medications, including certain SSRIs, though risks are non-zero. SANCTUM prioritizes tapering medications when clinically appropriate, as this is associated with improved outcomes and safety. All medications must be disclosed during intake and reviewed by qualified clinicians. Participation may be modified, delayed, or declined based on individual risk factors.
-
Any physical or mental health concerns should be shared during the intake process. Transparency allows facilitators to assess risk and determine whether participation is appropriate. In some cases, alternative options may be recommended.
-
Costs vary by individual and program design. Psilocybin services are typically infrequent rather than ongoing. Some individuals find that this approach reduces long-term reliance on daily medications or accelerates other therapeutic and coaching work. Cost comparisons are highly individual. When weighed against the long-term costs of certain conditions, such as addiction or PTSD, estimates from institutions such as Americans for Ibogaine suggest psychedelic treatments may save hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime.
-
Psilocybin is not appropriate for everyone. Readiness and alignment are assessed through consultation, screening, and informed consent. Participation is always voluntary.
-
Experiences vary widely. Some individuals report significant insight, emotional shifts, symptom reduction or remission, and meaningful life changes. Others report more subtle effects. Clinical studies show that a substantial proportion of participants rate their experience as among the most meaningful of their lives. No outcomes are guaranteed.
-
Booking begins with an inquiry through our website. From there, a consultation and screening process helps determine eligibility and fit. Scheduling occurs only after screening is complete. You may book a consultation here: https://www.sanctumaspen.com/begin
-
No prior experience is required. Programs are designed to support both first-time participants and those with prior experience. Preparation and guidance are provided regardless of background.
-
Accommodations vary by program and may include private or shared spaces designed for rest and reflection. Details depend on the specific offering and are shared during booking. Comfort and privacy are prioritized.
-
Preparation is guided end-to-end by a trained SANCTUM facilitator. It typically includes health and safety screening, a “dieta” mind–body–spirit cleanse, preparation work, and practices supporting physical, psychological, and emotional readiness. Specific protocols vary by individual and program.
-
Private retreats or gatherings may be considered on a case-by-case basis. All uses must align with licensing requirements and SANCTUM Aspen’s values. Availability and terms vary. To propose a partnership opportunity, please email partnerships@sanctumaspen.com.
-
Participation in psilocybin services is always voluntary. Deposits are non-refundable. Cancellation policies vary by program and timing and are clearly communicated prior to confirmation. If a participant decides not to ingest psilocybin, eligible programs may offer non-psychedelic alternatives, such as breathwork, where appropriate.
